A Message to the Royal House: Doom for Jerusalem

Chapter 21
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur son of Melchiah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest, saying: 2 Please seek the LORD on our behalf, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babel is fighting against us; perhaps the LORD will do for us according to all his extraordinary deeds and will go up from upon us. 3 Jeremiah said to them, "Thus you shall say to Zedekiah." 4 Thus says the LORD God of Israel: Behold, I am turning the vessels of the warfare which are in your hand, which you are fighting with them, against the king of Babel and against the Chaldeans besieging you from outside to the wall, and I will gather them to the midst of this city. 5 I will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm and with anger and with wrath and with great fury. 6 And I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast, with a great pestilence; they will die. 7 And after this, utterance of the LORD: I will give Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people and the ones remaining in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babel and into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of the seekers of their life/soul. And he will strike them to the mouth of the sword; he will not spare over them and he will not have compassion and he will not show mercy. 8 And to this people you shall say, Thus says the LORD: Behold, I am giving before you the way of life and the way of death. 9 The one sitting in this city will die by sword and by famine and by pestilence, but the one going out and falling to the Chaldeans besieging you will live, and his nephesh will be to him for spoil. 10 For I have set my face on this city for evil and not for good — utterance of the LORD. It will be given into the hand of the king of Babel and burned in fire. 11 And to the house of the king of Judah: Hear the word of the LORD. 12 House of David, thus says the LORD: "Execute justice in the morning, and judgment, and rescue the robbed from the hand of the oppressor, lest my wrath go out like fire and burn, with no one extinguishing it because of the evil of your deeds." 13 Behold, to you, O inhabitant of the valley, rock of the plain, says the LORD, who say, "Who will terrify us, and who will come into our dens?" 14 And I will visit upon you according to the fruit of your evil deeds—oracle of the LORD—and I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it will devour all her surroundings.
